I moved into my new dorm room today and it’s been great so far. I have a single and my suite mates seem nice enough. But what the hell…

Either there is one insane OCD germaphobe or my suite mates are all ridiculous when it comes to showers. I was up all night writing a paper and twice I heard someone taking a shower for an hour and a half. I can’t even fathom the amount of unnecessary water consumption.

The worst part is I can’t even say anything just yet because I’m the new guy. Am I overeacting? It just seems such a selfish use of resources.

Just wait until you’ve built up a bit of friendship/banter with your roommates and then just crack jokes about it if you get an opportunity… "yeah, Jimmy takes about three days in the shower, god knows what he gets up to in there, haha" etc. And maybe that’ll shame/embarrass them into reining in the shower time a bit.

Well not necessarily… depends on the type of hot water heating system they have?

If there’s only a limited amount of hot water at any given time and it takes a while to heat up another tank’s worth, and someone is taking 1.5 hour showers, blasting through the whole tank of hot water (even if in the middle of the night) and leaving their housemates to shower under ballshrivellingly cold water then, yeah, I’d be "overreacting" too.

Ok, when he said "dorm" I thought about my freshman dorm, common bathrooms, hot water always available.

If his problem is that the guy drains the hot water so he doesn’t get any, he should say "hey, you keep draining all the hot water so I don’t get any. Can you not do that?" But if his problem, like he said, is that the guy is wasting resources, he’s got a long year aheadof him.

or just take a shower before this guy does. If the guy is taking 1.5 hour long showers in the middle of the night then who gives a fuck. "wasting resources" like the guy isn’t paying thousands and thousands of dollars to live in a 20 sq foot dorm room.

You’re WAY overreacting and I hope you don’t take extra napkins at dinner and that you never leave leftovers and that you wipe your ass with the exact amount of toilet paper needed so you’re not wasting resources.
It’s water touching a human body, it’s not like they are mixing it with radioactive and water soluble poison and pouring it into rivers that lead to the ocean.

Completely presumptuous and idiotic. Water that goes down the drain is sent to a sewage treatment plant, chlorinated and dumped into the ocean. It is a waste.

And how am I dying for a fight? I made a thread about it, the end.

There are plenty of problems in the world to worry yourself with, surely you can find other ways to waste your life other then troubling your roommates with energy consumption concerns.

I’m not sitting in someone’s piss when I need to shit so it would have to be cleaned. That’s not even in the same ballpark as just tying up the bathroom for an hour.

Everyone should do what’s best for everyone else….so you donate all your free time and money to charity, right? You you have no personal possessions beyond what’s essential for life?

Or are you a hypocrite who thinks this guy is a piece of shit because he uses too much water, but you ignore that your xbox/ps3/beater car/etc is also a drain on society’s resources?

Take a look at yourself and your own waste. Do you ever drive a car or take public transit that burns fossil fuels? Have you ever thrown away half a sandwich that some starving kid in Africa would have loved? Have you ever spent more than 5 minutes in the shower yourself?

Humans are a wasteful species, everyone is wasteful in their own way – some more than others – but you’re really in no place to try to claim any moral highground on wastefulness unless you live in a straw hut and bathe in ponds. Just deal with it, and keep in mind that you waste plenty of energy and resources yourself.
Maybe he’s in there for 90 minutes because he’s spankin it. Think about that when you bring it up to him…

i’ve had a ton of different roommates and this is just how it is
