The State of the World Inside The Asylum
Everywhere you turn in the news today, and yesterday, and the day before - there’s the United States, much as it was last year before and during the invasion of a sovereign nation we know as Iraq. A dictator was toppled, which is good. Dictators are poor fare in a world where we regard ourselves as humane. Weapons of Mass Destruction and links to terrorist organization(s) were the reasons behind said invasion. The world was in revolt as the United States disregarded the United Nations - an institution which it mainly founded.
Those that spoke up, that spoke out - these were the sane voices, and the last year has shown that they were right in many ways. Even now as Donald Rumsfeld claims responsibility with nothing but words for the abuse of prisoners of occupation, the world watches and condemns once again. If the world were the human body, white blood cells would surround such things and expel them; flush them from the system to keep them healthy.
But these prisoners are also a victim of legality. Would that George W. Bush, the Head Inmate of the United States, not declared an end to the War, they would be instead Prisoners of War, and the Crimes would be International War Crimes. But the United States is not part of the International War Crimes Tribunal.
Here’s the sad news for you insane inmates. There is No Innocence.
The United Nations
How the United Nations, despite the vehement voices of France and Germany (not to mention the General Public around the world!), allowed the invasion of Iraq to happen is simply astounding. And some people want to put them in charge of the Internet? Verily, if they would turn such a blind eye when it comes to human life, then why should we expect them to look out for interests of people when it comes to the internet? This does not mean that the present system for the internet is ideal, but it would be insane to ask people who have failed horribly at more important things to fail in other endeavours which require the same abilities.
It’s insane that there’s no proper site for the International War Crimes Tribunal anyway, so the United Nations needs a dose of sanity itself. But they do have the latest on Iraq. The UN site itself requires a six-pack of Pangalactic Gargle Blasters to navigate, and a lobotomy with a twist of lime to figure out all the acronyms.
The United Nations failed because the system that was created to keep such things from happening failed. Is this because a member of the UN Security Council (unSecurity council?) permitted this to happen? No, it’s because the rest of the world didn’t stand up when their very constituents did. In that, the United Nations failed because the world itself failed.
So why blame the United Nations? Good question. Now you’re one step closer to becoming sane.
The United States
The header for that could now be written ‘The Usual Suspects’, as we read the daily news in print, online, or delivered daily in audio and video doses that condense the insanity into an oversimplified smorgasbord of violence and destruction, replete with pointing fingers. George W. Bush. Donald Rumsfeld. Dick Cheney. Condoleeza Rice. Millionaires - Condoleeza Rice, the poorest of the lot, has an OIL TANKER named after her. Wow. The country must be made up of millionaires if millionaires are the ones running things. No sane blue collar worker would elect a millionaire to represent them, right? Unless they expect a millionaire to understand what it’s like to live from cheque to check.
This is a country that suffered a massive blow to it’s collective heart and mind on a date that has been better advertised than Christmas. Some say it could have been avoided. The sad fact was that it wasn’t, and therefore it *was* unavoidable with the present administration in place. But it doesn’t stop there.
What put the present U.S. Administration in place? Some say neglecting the votes of ‘minorities’ in the United States (such subjectiveness is insane if there is no reference to a majority!). Some say it’s the voting machines, and that’s being tracked down still as a new Presidential Election in the United States readies itself to swagger in with even more campaign advertisements. Some say it’s a matter of Law, and that George W. Bush became president by technicality. Yet, this is the system as it was - perhaps abused - so that wouldn’t have changed. In fact, the only thing to work toward is it not happening again.
So the system isn’t working? Then why is it that American Democracy is heralded as the ‘best in the world’ while America itself is a Republic? Why is it the group with the most money has the largest arsenal; the most highly trained military and the most need for things to be imported? Consider what would happen if the Far East simply stopped selling things to the United States to be resold everywhere else in the world.
The United States is definitely a problem with the present administration. But is the administration the problem, or is it the system which allowed the present administration to do such atrocious things?
And who is in charge of the system? The textbook answer is the American Public, though you’ll be hard pressed to find an American say that it’s his or her fault that there are insane people running their country. They may say that they didn’t vote for them, they may say that they didn’t vote, or they may say that they didn’t know. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with voting lunatics to run a country, until they start doing bad things in the name of the Country. In this case, it’s the United States. After these people are out of office, the wounds of the world will not remember the names of the millionaires. They will remember the name ‘United States’; they will remember that the country did these things. And every American passport will have to be shown with an apology.
Is it insane that the country looking for Legal Weapons of Mass Destruction used Legitimate Weapons of Mass Destruction - and maintains a nuclear arsenal? What happens if a U.S. administrations says, “Gee, we really don’t need that country anymore.”. Will you say then that the system failed, or will you instead address the system now?
But it’s not entirely the fault of the American Public, either.
The United Kingdom
Had The United States not gone to Iraq, it’s fair to say that the United Kingdom would not have done so either.
Iraq
Saddam Hussein - the guy that after being such a horrid dictator, was found groveling underground. Perhaps he was drugged. Perhaps not. Who knows. Who really cares? He was a bad guy. But he was a bad guy supported by the United States until *after* he invaded Kuwait. And when there was an uprising against him, and the people in revolt awaited assistance from the United States, was it the present U.S. administration that failed them? No, it was George W. Bush’s father. But that only brings to light the fact that it wasn’t one U.S. administration. It was, however, one Iraqi administration. Iraq, despite what we’ve seen about how they have been persecuted by the invading forces, isn’t innocent either. However, according to the latest reports we get every day, there’s been a complete purge of every naughty Iraqi - except the resistance fighters (and that’s what they could be seen as) who keep popping up. Given that it takes 9 months for a terrorist human to be born, just like any other human, it’s apparent that the Iraqis planned for this invasion well in advance, at least by 9 months. Toddlers equipped with diapers and suicide bomb lego kits. Not.
The average Iraqi has simply switched dictators. Are they all innocent? Of course not. But the people who pick up weapons keep getting killed; is that sui-geno-cide? A page from the book of Mahatma Gandhi. Now THAT was a sane man.
Simply insane. At least Spain has voted in a new government. Why on Earth would a country support such an endeavour? And people say that the United Nations, the United States and England are the problem? They are not alone. The formed a coalition to share the blame, and the contracts for rebuilding (greed?) Iraq. Why isn’t this Coalition in the international news as much as the United States?
Is the Coalition of the Willing still around, or did they simply leave their asses in the air when they buried their heads in the Sand of Iraq?
Or perhaps they’ll say that they have nothing to do with this, that they were lied to? But really… Why had they become part of the coalition? What motivated them then? If they are still a part of it, what motivates them now?
The Rest Of The World
A lot of the world is gasping at what has happened to Iraqi prisoners. They’re shocked that the U.S. intelligence community drew a blank on WMD. And they’re spending a LOT of time talking about things that they have no effect on, because they have *chosen* not to have an effect on them. Meanwhile, local politicians thank Bush for being as insane as he is so that others are distracted from their own insanity.
The first victim of War is Truth, but the most horrible thing that has happened is the paralysis of the world - a paralysis which does not even allow the world to do anything else but gasp.
