Starting therapy, what should I expect
I’m starting therapy this week. The plan was to start a month ago. I was having some serious concerns about my life, my future and my relationship with my SO, so I wanted to take a break from my SO and just vent to a therapist for a while and figure it out from there.
But, my SO called me up…and dumped me
So, I said fuck it and spent a few weeks in a drunken stupor and now I think it’s time to be constructive about my situation. I’ve never been to a therapist so I don’t know what to expect.
Each therapist is a little different. Some just sit and listen to you chat about whatever. Some ask questions during the chat. Some do both. Some actually do what’s typically shown on TV and things where they say "Okay, let’s go back to this point in time, blah blah blah. How did this event make you feel?" etc.
Just go in with an open mind, is all I can really say. I went into my therapy sessions with a certain level of expectation and I don’t know if my expectations were too high or if my therapist was a lame duck, but it wasn’t working out for me. So now I’m looking for a new therapist.
I was going through a tough time last year so I started seeing one, I kept going to the sessions until I felt like it was unnecessary which took about 6 months. Many times through out the sessions I felt like it was pointless and I could just use any friend and talk to them about the same issues but then again there are many things which you don’t see or understand because of your mental state.
